Records from the Office of Communication, 1951-
Scope and Contents of the Records
This collection contains materials created and collected by the Office of Communications. The bulk of the material is comprised of press clippings and ephemera related to exhibitions and events associated with the Clark. Of note are materials from other institutions on travelling exhibitions from the Clark, such as ephemera on the exhibition “Impressionism: Paintings from the Clark” at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Italian language clippings on “Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris” at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy.
The media included in the collection covers events and individuals associated with the Clark. Candid photographs of events, staff, and meetings form the bulk of the graphic materials. CDs and DVDs in the collection contain digital photographs, alongside working files and videos.
The 2024 accrual contains graphic materials, the bulk of which are slides depicting people, places, exhibitions, and events at the Clark Art during the years 1995-2008. Some events within this accrual include exhibitions like Noble Dreams, Wicked Pleasures: Orientalism in America, Impressions: Painting Quickly, and Millet: Then and Now, among others. Many public events are included within the slides and other photographic material, family days, concerts, the French Country Fair in 1996, and other members events such as a pancake breakfast for the Sugaring Off exhibition are included as slide images as well. The bulk of the slides collected in the 2024 accrual are unspecified in the folder title, however a list of events depicted is recorded on the front of the folder in chronological order.
Some slides within the collection are of staff members from around the year 2002. These slide sheets were removed and made into their own subseries as Staff Slides. Staff slides identify many individual staff and groups of staff and have been made into their own subseries to ease access to just staff slides.
CD’s within the collection also contain staff photos from parties and other internal Clark events and functions.
The Photographs included within the accrual contain more broad categories and each folder contains a mix of years and events. Some of the printed photographs were labeled stock images and span multiple events, mostly Clark symposia, lectures, and family days. Any transparencies and negatives within the 2024 accrual are organized with the Photographs.
The Series XI, Subsries E: Multimedia section of this collection contains DVD's as well as Mini DV's and Audio Cassettes that have been rehoused from where they would stand in the chronology of the subseries for the safety of the material. DVD's can be found in Box 35, Folder 2. All Audio Cassettes and Mini DV's were rehoused in a smaller better suited box, Box 37. Please refernce these boxes for a full chronology of the collected multimedia footage.

Custodial History
These records were housed in Storage A and the Communications Department until May 2008.
Processing Information
Some staples were removed, duplicates were discarded, and items were placed roughly in chronological order.
In July of 2023, collections CAI ARC 2008.15 Print Ads from the Communications Department, CAI ARC 2012.05 Communications Department Records, and CAI ARC 2022.01 Communications Office Material were added to this collection. The merge involved rearrangement and additional processing, including the disposal of duplicates and rehousing.
In June of 2024, an unprocessed collection of ten boxes marked CAI ARC 2009.24 from the public relations department (which became the Communications Department) was added to CAI ARC 2008.14 as an accrual. The accrual includes photographic slides, printed photographs, negatives, transparencies, and CD’s containing digitized images from the Clark Art. Graphic material within the 2024 accrual depicts people, places, exhibitions, artworks, books, and other events at The Clark during the years 1995-2008. Within the original boxes where printed copies of the photos contained on the CD’s. The print outs were determined duplicate material and discarded.
Slides from the 2024 Accrual were arranged chronologically before processing, each section contained an un-foldered table of contents for the events depicted within the slides. The contents sheets were collected and given a single folder. Some slides were removed from sleeves cnoating like slides and placed together through the collection. A decision was made to sort these displaced slides into their correct year and event to be placed in a chronological order again. Also, within the original boxes were slides removed from the bulk of the material and labeled “stock images”. These slides corresponded to many of the denoted events in the larger group of photo slides and were placed back with their respective events. “Stock Images” slides no longer exist, and the material is included within the large chronological series of slides.
