Scope and Contents of the Records
This collection contains the records of the Photograph and Slide Librarian at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute from 1974-2003. The bulk of the material is composed of business correspondence during J. Dustin Wees’ tenure. Included are documents covering the implementation and development of the collections management software Argus by Questor, annual reports on departmental activity, employment records, and documents establishing the use and organization of spaces in the Manton Research Center. Various indexes and catalogs relating to the purchase of slides can also be found in the collection.

History of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute
The Photograph and Slide Department, led by the Photograph and Slide Librarian, was established in 1974 as a resource for the growing scholarly community using the Clark’s library. The department was headed by J. Dustin Wees from 1974-2000, and then by Elizabeth Kieffer from 2000-2003. Images contained within the collection were the main source of reference images for students and professors prior to the availability of easily accessible digital copies.

Arrangement of the Papers
This collection is divided into eight series:
• Series I: Correspondence is arranged alphabetically.
• Series II: Reports is arranged alphabetically.
• Series III: Financial Records is arranged alphabetically.
• Series IV: Employment is chronologically
• Series V: Collections Management Software is arranged alphabetically.
• Series VI: Memoranda is arranged chronologically.
• Series VII: Administrative Records is arranged alphabetically.
• Series VIII: Catalogues, Indexes, and Binder is arranged into Subseries A: Indexes, arranged alphabetically; Subseries B: Slide Acquisition Binder, not arranged in any particular order; Subseries C: Courtauld Institute Lists, not arranged in any particular order.
Custodial History
Portions of this collection were transferred to the Clark Art Institute Archives sometime after 1981. Remaining records were transferred from the Office of the Photograph and Slide Librarian in January 2007.
Processing Information
Dani Ryan, archives assistant, and Alex Grimley, archives intern, processed these records in August 2007. Staples were removed and materials were re-housed in acid free folders and boxes.
Mario Cesareo, archives assistant, revised and reorganized this collection in January 2023. Courtauld Institute Lists were removed from their original housing and placed in legal-sized folders in their original order.
