The Records of John H. Brooks, 1968-2001, is organized into three series: Correspondence, Collection Inventories, and a 2008 accrual.
John H. Brooks was employed by the Clark, beginning in 1968 as th Assistant and later Associate, Director. He retired in 2001 but continued as a part-time consultant through 2007, running the docent summer school and Friends of the Clark travel programs.
Series I is comprised of carbon copies of John H. Brooks's outgoing business correspondence from 1968-1977. This correspondence primarily involves the planning and organization of events at the Clark, confirming school group visits, confirming flight and hotel reservations for visiting lecturers, and arranging meetings between staff members.
Series II is comprised of ten folders of the Clark’s art collection inventories beginning in the early 1970's; these inventories were accessioned from a storage area.
Series III contains a donation of 44 folders made by Brooks in April, 2008. These records span 1968-2007, and include records of the education program, members' trips, public events at the Clark, departmental reports prepared by Brooks, and a variety of attendance records and statistics.

The material in this collection is open to research; selected areas of the collection, including loan forms, and financial and personnel records, are permanently closed.

Abstract
The Records of John H. Brooks, Associate Director of the Clark from 1968 - 2001, is generally comprised of business correspondence and collection inventories. A 2008 accrual added records of Brooks’ dealings with other departments within the Clark.
Arrangement of the Records
This collection is divided into three series transferred to the archives at different times.
• Series I is divided by year and arranged alphabetically within each year.
• Series II is arranged alphabetically by subject.
• Series III maintains the original categorical organization of John Brooks; subjects are divided into administration, editing, education, membership, public programs, registrar, miscellaneous, and summaries.
Custodial History
The bulk of these materials were transferred to storage sometime after 1977 and stayed there until the formation of the Archives in 2006. The 2008 accrual was sent to the archives by John Brooks in early 2008.
Location of Originals
This collection is held in the Clark Art Institute Archives.
Processing Information
These materials were processed by Dani Ryan and Lacy Schutz in April, 2007. The original order was retained. Paperclips and staples were removed and materials were rehoused in acid-free folders. The run of inventories were added in June of 2007.
The finding aid was revised by Mario Cesareo in March, 2022.
