Scope and Contents of the Records

The Curatorial Office Records of Jennifer Gordon Lovett are comprised of documents reflecting Gordon Lovett’s role as Associate Curator, as well as the Office's broader role within the organizaitonal structure of the Clark. The collection includes interdepartmental meeting notes, institutional and departmental budgets, correspondence with individual staff and Board members, and documentation of security processes, conservation, and graduate student and intern correspondence and records. The collection also contains documentation of photo orders requested from the Clark’s in-house photo facility, and correspondence regarding image reproduction rights.

Gordon Lovett produced a wealth of research material on the collections of the Clark Institute, as well as exhibition-specific research. Among these are extensive records of American women sculptors and a National Endowment for the Arts grant application for Lovett’s proposed exhibition, Brazen Women. Lovett also kept notes and background research on potential gifts and acquisitions, as well as loans to and from the Clark.

Biographical / Historical

Jennifer Gordon Lovett graduated from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art in 1981. From 1983 to 1995 she held the position of assistant, then associate, curator. During her tenure at the Clark she authored catalogs such as Cast in the Shadow: Models for Public Sculpture in America; A Glimpse of Rococo France: The Amorous Proposal by Francǫis Le Moyne; Empires Restored, Elysium Revisited: The Art of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema; A Romance with Realism: The Art of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux; and The Art and Craft of Nineteenth-Century Sculpture.

Location of Originals

This collection is held in the Clark Art Institute Archives.

Processing Information

Lacy Schutz, Archivist, and Dani Ryan, Archives Assistant, processed these records in May and June of 2007. Staples were removed and materials were re-housed in acid free folders and boxes.

In July, 2022 Mario Cesareo reorganized the materials into series and relabeled the folders and boxes to reflect these changes.
