Scope and Contents note
This exhibition examined the ways in which art historical enquiry intersects with advances in science that had radically changed the field of conservation. Among the works were a 20th-century forgery of a portrait after the 17th-century Dutch Painter Jan Vermeer; The Coming Storm by American landscape painter George Inness, revealed by x-ray analysis to cover a painting by his son; and an enigmatic 16th-century drawing of the Mona Lisa, which, despite rigorous analysis, can neither be authenticated nor discounted as a work by Leonardo da Vinci.
