Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series V, Capital and Expansion Campaign for The Clark Art Institute, includes documentation related to the Clark's campus overhaul project, spanning the years 1995 to 2014. There are three subseries included within this series.

Subseries A, Information on the Capital Campaign for The Clark, includes general financial forecasts, institutional positioning, and general dated folders for each year of the campaign. These folders hold donor information, financial benchmarks, and other logistical documents as well as the case statement for the Capital Campaign overall. These records are permanently closed to research.

Subseries B, Advancement and Development, is comprised of records produced by the department (called initially Development, then Advancement) charged with managing the development of the Clark's Capital Campaign. This subseries includes details related to the 2007 Morton/Manton Gift. The Manton Art Foundation made a gift to The Clark following Sir Edwin Manton’s death. In 2007 the gift, which included over 300 drawings, paintings, and prints by British artists, and a significant monetary contribution which endowed RAP positions, was given to The Clark. The Manton Collection was at the time the most significant single addition of art to the Clark's collection since its founding in 1955. The Manton Research Center, opened in 1973, was renamed in honor of the Manton family's generosity. A significant renovation of the building was completed in 2016 by Annabelle Selldorf. Papers included in the Manton folders include gift agreements, correspondence, meeting minutes, appraisals, dedications, and reports presented to the Manton Art Foundation.

Also contained within Subseries B is information on the many gifts and property prospects investigated by The Clark during Conforti’s tenure as director. Gift agreements, lease and mortgage documents, property prospects, and general gifting information are included in this section of the subseries. The next portion of Subseries B is related to fundraising and grants. Included in this section are records on the grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, call reports and memos, procedures and manuals, information on programs for donors and other fundraising efforts, as well as acknowledgement letters to patrons and business patrons. This material is permanently closed to research.

Subseries C, Financial Documents, include administrative details of grant development, department funding, metrics projects, general financial forecasts, budget meetings, economic impact studies, SCORE, benchmarks, as well as budget reviews for the Stone Hill projects. This material is permanently closed to research.

Subseries D, Buildings and Grounds, is comprised of records detailing the Expansion Project of the Clark Art campus beginning in 1995. This expansion included two new buildings, the Lunder Center and the Clark Center, designed by architect Tadao Ando, and an overhaul of the 140-acre grounds including a water feature and other outdoor areas, designed by landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand. The Lunder Center at Stone hill was the first of the two buildings finished during the Expansion Project and was completed in 2008. The Clark Center was completed in 2014 and was unveiled to the public during that year's grand reopening.

Other records within Subseries D include environmental studies for the grounds, plans for construction from architectural firms such as Gensler and Reed Hilderbrand, policies and planning for food service and the café, general building plans, retail reports, permits and certifications, energy, daylight, and environmental studies, details on the water tower which holds Williamstown’s water supply and is located on Stone Hill, details for established buildings from Hill Engineers, rainwater management, reports on resources, information on accessibility across the museum, as well as furniture and fixture evaluations across all building projects. Also included are more administrative records such as meeting minutes, correspondence, and documents detailing the logistics of public openings. Selected records from this subseries will become available for public research at the discretion of the Clark Archivist.
