Elevator Cars, Hoistways, and Machine Rooms - Dover Corporation No. C8597 - C8600
Scope and Contents Note
The records held in this collection were created by Pietro Belluschi, The Architect’s Collaborative (TAC), and various subcontractors during the construction of the Manton Research Center in 1973. Named in 2007 in honor of Sir Edwin Alfred Grenville Manton, the building houses the Clark’s Research and Academic Program, Library, Manton Study Center for Works on Paper, auditorium, galleries, offices, and classrooms.
Architectural plans designed by TAC and Belluschi offer broad views of the Manton, including floor plans, elevations, and layouts. Detailed drawings were provided by subcontractors, and mediated by contractor George A. Fuller Co., and engineering firm LeMessurier Consultants. These drawings were frequently revised, and copies of the numerous revisions are included in the collection.
Four binders provide additional insight into the design of the Manton Center. Of note are two proposal binders containing the development of potential designs leading up to the construction of the building; these binders feature drawings and sketches for the proposed building, photographs of models, schematic design descriptions, site plans, and information about the Clark and the existing Museum building. Also included are a specifications manual titled General Documents and Technical Specifications for Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and a portfolio of descriptive data for the 1976 American Institute of Architects Honor Awards Program.
